I’m a New Yorker with the heart and soul of a Northern Californian. After 20 years as a community-based social worker, I became a researcher to impact and disrupt the systems of oppression embedded in and perpetuated by social service programs and social welfare policies. As the Director of Transgender Research and a Senior Research Scientist at the Hunter Alliance for Research & Translation (HART) at Hunter College, I use research as a tool for social change to help create a world where all trans and non-binary people can thrive. In my free time, I love going on hikes and snuggling with my dog Franklin, taking long bike rides, listening to, and playing music and eating good food with friends.

I’m a born and bred New Yorker, and I’m proud to have worked in all five boroughs of this city. I’m a psychology professor at Hunter College, CUNY, and the thing that I love most about my job is working with the young people (and returning students!) who bring their full selves, experiences, and insights to our shared learning. In my research, I try always to do work that is useful and meaningful to my collaborators, and much of my efforts been focused on training providers how to talk to patients in ways that make them feel seen and safe. In my free time, I love to explore new neighborhoods and try new foods.

Danielle Berke
she/her
Danielle Berke was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and has been queer, critical, and questioning since her inception. She was called to economic justice and sexual violence survivor advocacy in her early adulthood and has built a career and life centered around trauma-informed practice and science as a lens for understanding and resisting systems of oppression. As an assistant professor of psychology at Hunter College she directs the Gender Based Violence Laboratory as a space to create community and partnership among scientists and community leaders who share the goal of creating a violence-free future for all people. Danielle loves funk, soul, and rock music and enjoys bouldering at various NYC indoor rock gyms in her free time.

Elijah Castle
he/him
Native New Jerseyan currently living in New York City. I am a study coordinator for the Hunter Alliance for Research and Translation (HART) at Hunter College. Previously, I have worked in the gender-affirming surgery program at NYU Langone and at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. I am particularly interested in work related to patient-provider relationships, access to healthcare for trans people, and patient autonomy and informed consent. I also like to do peer and community support and education on topics related to gender-affirming healthcare, surgery navigation (especially genital surgeries), and sexual health. When I’m not doing that, I’m usually making or listening to eclectic Spotify playlists, going to the gym, or looking at the many, many photos of my pets I have saved on my phone.

Lila Starbuck
she/her
I grew up in New Jersey and have lived in New York City for fifteen years. I work for Hunter Alliance for Research & Translation (HART) at Hunter College, CUNY, and have past experience ranging from sex-positive sex ed for teens and adults, to NYC health department program evaluation. I care about research that targets social and structural contributors to disparities in health and other areas. Outside work, I enjoy co-creating and spending time in queer & trans social and celebratory spaces, DJing and listening to music, and being outside on warm sunny days.

I moved to Brooklyn from Boston three years ago to join the Gender-Based Violence lab and begin a clinical psychology PhD program at the City University of New York. I lean on my own lived experiences as a queer and trans person to help bridge the gaps in power and understanding between communities and researchers, and try to use my privilege to make research and clinical settings safer spaces for trans and nonbinary people of color. I have a lot of experience in trauma assessment, and am also interested in co-creating interventions by and for our communities to reduce suicide risk and increase access to gender-affirming care. As an introvert who moved to New York in the middle of a pandemic, I’ve worked hard to create queer and trans community for myself here. If I'm not working or studying, you’ll probably find me reading queer YA stories, cooking something experimental, or working up the courage to perform my music at local open mic nights!
